New Jersey to Require Housing Providers to Accept Rent Payment Via Credit Card

New Jersey is poised to mandate that landlords accept rent payment by credit card. The bill awaiting signature by Governor Murphy will give tenants another option to remain current with their rent. Fees associated with credit card processing will be added to the amount due as rent.  The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated change in all facets of life, and residential leasing is no exception. Although accepting payment by credit card will be a technological hurdle for some apartment operators, it might improve collections during a time when evictions for nonpayment are barred.  Renters should be aware that missed credit card payments can have a significant impact on credit score, and credit cards typically carry high interest rates compared to other loans. Nevertheless, credit cards might be a good option to help renters keep current with their rent.

5G Advances Mean Exciting Times for Multifamily Broadband

Recent advances in 5G technology have led to more choice than ever for apartmenet residents. Wireless carriers including T Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T now offer home internet delivered by the same connectivity  that powers cell phones. Unlike cell phones, however, the 5G signal is converted to a local wifi network that connects users on the home network. Latencies and speeds can rival those achieved over cable and even fiber connections in some cases. Many 5G internet users enjoy a considerable savings over traditional cable or fiber connections. When shopping for internet service for your next apartment, be sure to consider 5G internet service in addition to traditional cable and fiber. In addition, if you have been limiting yourself to buildings that have a fiber connection meet your connectivity needs, it might be possible to consider buildings that don't have fiber to the premises.
